David Manson

SRoH.     Private David Manson.        Home: Garden Street, Gatehouse.
Enlisted October 1914, 1st Battalion King’s Own Scottish Borderers.
Served on Western Front (Arras, Ypres, Somme, La Bassee).
Prisoner of war in Germany 11th April 1918 till 25th November 1918.

1901 Anwoth census, Garden Street : David Manson (4, born Gatehouse) with father David (Burgh Officer) and mother Joan + 4 siblings.

1911 Anwoth census, Fleet Street : David's father David was a 44 year old widower living with his daughter Jessie. Son David is not in either Anwoth or Girthon.

David & Thomas Manson are clearly brothers.They are cousins of Charles Manson.

Gatehouse link : Born in Gatehouse.

Robert Manson

SRoH : No clear reference in Stewartry Roll of Honour. Identified as a soldier by Muriel Palmer. He was a brother of her grandmother Jane Manson but his regiment is unknown.

Could be identified as a soldier from Gatehouse ex Kirkcudbright Advertiser ''First Instalment of Stewartry Roll of Honour'' 25th December 1914.

Note:  Robert's cousin Thomas Manson from Gatehouse enlisted in 1914 but in the RFA.

1891 Girthon Census, Catherine Street: Robert Manson (8, born Gatehouse) with father James (46, general labourer), mother Jessie (34), sister Agnes, step-sister Mary Connal and brothers James and Charles.

1901 Girthon Census : Robert was not at home and his mother Jessie is now a widow.
Robert was a servant living in Balmaghie in this census. (ex Muriel Palmer)

1911 Girthon Census : Mother Jessie Manson is now living alone in Catherine Street.

Muriel Palmer supplied the following information:
Robert was born on 13/12/1882.
He married Wilhelmina Jane Howitson in 1919 at The Manse, Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire.
He died of leukaemia on 03/05/1925 in Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow.
He was a brother of Private Charles Manson. His sister Agnes Manson married Private Thomas McSkimming.
He was also a cousin of brothers David and Thomas Mason who were also soldiers.

Identified from Military Records on Ancestry.co.uk after searching for ‘Gatehouse’.

Born c.1890 Anwoth     Father: David Manson, Mother: Joan
Originally enlisted 03/09/1914  728 Royal Field Artillery 268 Battalion
Fit for service but had a hammer toe. (aged 23 years 9 months).  Occupation: miner.
Discharged 17/12/1914 after 107 days (Para. 392 IIIC King’s regulations).
Address: 10 Horse Wynd, Edinburgh.
Re -enlisted 14/01/1915 at Inverness (aged 24 years & 2 months). Occupation : coal miner.     He had black hair, brown eyes and was 5’ 5¼’’ tall.
He served with the BEF in France July 1915 to 1918 with some spells at Home.
Chest injury in 1916, ankle injury 1917. Wounded 23/04/1918. Had a shrapnel wound over his eyebrow. Demobbed 13/01/1919 at Perth.
Job on demob. with Henrie & Ben (?) Coal company in Portobello, as a drawer.
In 1935 he applied to the army for copies of his papers as he had accidentally burnt his. His address was 2 Bridge Street, Portobello.

1911 Anwoth Census, Fleet Street : Thomas' father David is a 44 year old widower living with his daughter Jessie. Thomas is neither in Anwoth nor Girthon.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 14th July 1916 : Mr D. Manson, Gatehouse, has been informed that his son, Private Thomas Manson, has been wounded in the chest.

David & Thomas Manson are clearly brothers.They are cousins of Charles Manson.

Enlisted May 1915, 1/5th Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Transferred from 3rd Gordon Highlanders to R. S. F.
Served on Eastern and Western Fronts (Egypt, Palestine and France).

1891 Kirkinner Census, at Grieve House, North Balfern  :Hugh Marshall (2, born Kirkinner) with parents Alexander (38, grieve) and Mary + 6 siblings.

1901 Kirkcudbright Census, at Dromore Cottage : Hugh Marshall (12, born Mochrum, Wigtownshire) with father Alexander (shepherd), mother Mary, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

1911 England Census, at Weardale, Co.Durham : Hugh Marshall (22, fluorspar miner, born Kirkinner) with parents Alexander (59, fluorspar miner) and Mary +1 brother & 2 sisters.

The above 3 census records relate to the same family, but there is nothing in them that links Hugh Marshall to the army or Gatehouse.

George Maxwell

SRoH.    Lance-Corporal George Maxwell.     Home: Gosforth, Newcastle-on-Tyne.    Born: Barharrow, Gatehouse.     Enlisted December 1915, Machine Gun Corps.

Military Records : Joined Army in 1915.  Attested 13th May 1918 at Newcastle-on-Tyne.     Machine Gun Corps, No. 173095.    24 yrs 9 mths.   Police Constable.      Not married.     Presbyterian.     Next of kin : father, George Maxwell, lived Twynholm.     Posted to 85th Territorial Reserve Battalion. Home service Clipstone, Grantham & Rugeley.     ‘Dispersed’ 13th Jan 1919 at Ripon.

1881 Borgue Census, Barharrow Cottage : George Maxwell (1, born Borgue) with father George (26,ploughman, born Ireland) and mother Agnes + 2 brothers & 1 sister.

1901 Rerrick Census, Craigraploch Cottage, Rerrick : George Maxwell (11, born  Borgue), with father George (ploughman) and mother Agnes + 3 brothers & 3 sisters.
