SRoH.     Private Francis McClymont.    Home: Gatehouse.     Mobilised 4th August 1914, 1/5th King’s Own Scottish Borderers.     Served on Eastern and Western Fronts.     Killed in action 16th August 1917.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 21st September 1917: Death of Private Francis McClymont K.O.S.B., 2nd son of Mr & Mrs F. McClymont, Catherine Street. Francis was killed in action on 16th August (1917). Private McClymont left Gatehouse with the first detachment of the K.O.S.B. on 6th August 1914. At the date of his death he was just over 19 years of age.

Francis's brothers Hugh and Robert were also soldiers.

Francis was known in the family as “Tassie”.

Identified from Military Records on Ancestry.co.uk after searching for ‘Gatehouse’ and also from Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser “First Instalment of Stewartry Roll of Honour” 25th December 1914.

Military Records : Private 1533 K.O.S.B. 5th Battalion.  Home: Catherine Street, Gatehouse.      Enlisted 23/03/1914  (age given as 17 years – he was actually 15).     Born Girthon, Gatehouse.    5’ 2’’ tall.     Father: Francis McClymont, Mother: Mary, Brother: Robert, all living in Catherine Street.    Apprentice bobbin turner with Walker & Co. Gatehouse.
Discharged (reason: under 17 years of age)        Para. 392 VIB King’s regulations
Transferred to Reserve Battalion 30/12/1914.
Transferred to Territorial Force 23/05/1915.
Served at home 12/03/1914 to 24/03/1916.

Identified from Kirkcudbright Advertiser report 9th March 1917 and also from Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser “First Instalment of Stewartry Roll of Honour” 25th December 1914.      Private R McClymont       5th King’s Own Scottish Borderers.

Military Records : Robert McClymont. Born Gatehouse, Kirkcudbrightshire. Age 20 years & 3 months when he enlisted on 28th November 1912.  Lived in Gatehouse. A labourer working for Black Bros. He was 5'7'' tall and single.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 9th March 1917: Private Robert McClymont, eldest son of Francis McClymont, Catherine Street, Gatehouse, is suffering from shell shock and is recovering in hospital in Rouen, France. 

Girthon Banns : Francis McClymont from Whithorn married Mary Fitzpatrick from Girthon in June 1892. (parents)

Robert, Francis and Hugh McClymont were brothers. Francis was killed in 1917.

John McConnell

SRoH.     Private John McConnell.              Home: Lanefoot, Gatehouse.
Enlisted April 1916, 16th Battalion Australian Imperial Force.
Served on the Western Front (Somme).     Wounded once (Bullecourt).
Prisoner of war in Germany from 11th April 1917 to 17th December 1918.

1911 Anwoth Census, at Lanefoot : John McConnell not at home, but his parents Thomas and Roseanna McConnell were. Note: The Fisherman’s Cottage is at Lanefoot, Cardoness.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 18th May 1917: Missing since early April Private John McConnell, Australians. Only son of Mr & Mrs T. McConnell, Cardoness Fisheries. (near Gatehouse).

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 10th August 1917: Mr & Mrs T. McConnell, Cardoness Fisheries have received a postcard from their son Private John McConnell, Australians, saying that he is a prisoner of war in Germany. He had been reported missing on 11th April (1917).

William McCormack

SRoH.     Private William McCormick.        Home : Bridge-of-Dee.
Enlisted May 1917, 5th Reserve Highland Light Infantry. Transferred to Machine Gun Corps. Served on Western Front.       Died of wounds July 1918.
