Served on Eastern Front.     Once wounded.      Died 22nd November 1917 (Salonika).

SRoH.     Gunner David T. Johnstone.    Home: Gatehouse.     Enlisted in Royal Field Artillery.    Served on Eastern Front.
Died at Salonika, 28th November 1917.

1901 Girthon Census, Catherine Street, Gatehouse : David T. Johnston, (7, born Gatehouse), with father David (mole catcher), mother Ann + 3 siblings.

1911 Girthon Census, Catherine Street : David Johnstone, (17, born Girthon) with father David (garden labourer), and mother Ann.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 7th December 1917: Gunner David Johnstone R.F.A. is ill in hosptal in Salonika since 28th November. He died of dysentry aged 23. He has a wife and 2 children who reside at Neilson Square. His father is Mr David Johnstone, Catherine Street, Gatehouse. Information was received from Lieut. Lawrie from Gatehouse.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 12th August 1921: Unveiling of Gatehouse War Memorial. Wreath laid: ‘In loving memory of our dear son, D. T. Johnstone, from father, mother, brothers and sisters.’

John McK. and David T. Johnstone appear to be brothers. John survived the war.

Identified as soldier ex Kbt Adv. 18/06/1915.      Survived the War.

1891 Girthon Census, in Nelson Square (should say Neilson Square) : Albert Lourie (3, born Paisley, Renfrewshire) with father David (labourer) and mother Mary Jane + brothers William, Robert A., David and 3 sisters.

1901 Glasgow Census, at 71 Centre Street, Govan : Albert Lawrie (13, born Paisley, Renfrewshire) with father David (dock labourer) and mother Mary Jane (both parents born in Gatehouse) + 3 brothers – (David, Robert A, & Frederick), 3 sisters and a brother in law.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 18/06/1915 : Corporal Albert Lowrie 2nd Highland Light Infantry. He has received a bullet wound in the shoulder and is being treated in a Birmingham Hospital.

Died 26/04/1915. Buried Seaforth Cemetery, Cheddar Villa, West Vlaanderen, Belgium (Grave B.1/A.1)
Wife: Agnes Lowrie, 94 King Street, South Side, Glasgow.

1881 Ulverston Census, Cumbria at 53 Quebec Street : William Lowrie (4, born Scotland) father David (iron miner) and mother Mary Jane + brothers Thomas, David and 2 sisters.

1891 Girthon Census, in Nelson Square  (should say Neilson Square) : William (14, born Gatehouse) with father David (labourer) and mother Mary Jane + brothers David, Robert A., Albert and 3 sisters.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 18/06/1915 : Mrs Lowrie, who left Gatehouse about 20 years ago, has 5 sons and a son-in-law who have served in Kitchener’s Army.
Private William Lowrie served with 2nd Seaforth Highlanders and was killed a month ago (actually April 1915) He had been a Reservist who went to France last October.
Also her son-in-law Private Tom McDonald is training with 5th Scottish Rifles at Stirling.

Date of Birth: 09/07/1868.
Labourer. 5' 8'', good physical condition, normal vision. Presbyterian.
Next of Kin = Mother, Mary (Mrs J. Jamieson) 274 Railway Street, Nelson, Lancashire.
Single but had a dependant, Alec. Robinson (6 yrs old) of 13 Clifton St  Hornsea(?) Hull.  Residence : Hornsea(?) Hull, Yorkshire.

Medical - suffered a back injury on 12/12/1917 while on active service and had 4 hospital stays between then and 1918. When he was discharged in 1920, he suffered from chronic rheumatism which had been aggravated on active service in France. Treated in Queen Mary's Hospital, Whalley.

1911 Hull Census Alpha Ave: John McBurnie, labourer in dockyard, aged 41, born Gatehouse, Scotland with wife Alice (37, born Anlaby, Yorkshire). Married 3 years but no children.
          We found no death for Alice McBurnie between 1911 and 1915 when John enlisted and said that he was single.

Birth: John McBurnie born 1868 in Anwoth/Girthon on the Scotlands People Index. There were several Burnie/McBurnie families in Gatehouse around the late 1860's but no birth has been found in the local Church records for a John on 09/07/1868 (from Army records), nor in the 1871 Anwoth or Girthon census.
