William Craig

SRoH.         Private William Craig.             Home: Gatehouse-of-Fleet.
Enlisted June 1915, Royal Army Service Corps (Motor Transport).
Served on Western Front (Ypres & Somme).      Awarded 1915 Star.

Military Papers: (M2/113660) Wife Ellen McCree Carson, (married 01/06/1912 Wimbledon).     At start of war lived at Nether House, Castle Douglas. Was a Lorry Driver in A.S.C. Discharged 16th January 1919 (aged 42) with hand injury & thyroidectomy, after treatment at Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow. Home now (i.e. after the war) in Crocketford. Awarded pension of 8/3d per week.

1901 Kelton Census, 56 Queen Street : Craig (24, groom, born Anwoth) at Boarding House run by Margaret Wilson (37).

1911 Girthon & Anwoth Censuses : No William Craig.

1911 Wimbledon Census : at Ivyhurst Lodge, EdgeHill : William Craig (35, domestic chauffeur , born Gatehouse, Kirkcudbrightshire) with Thomas and Frances Chandler.

Scotlands People Index 1876 birth William Craig at Girthon. None in Anwoth.

Free BMD : 1912 Q2 marriage William Craig to Ellen M Carson at Kingston, London.

 

Ancestry.co.uk Wife Ellen was born c.1874 at Lochgilphead, Argyllshire. She was living with her family at Kells, Kirkcudbrightshire in 1881 census.

James Craik

SRoH.       Not in Stewartry Roll of Honour. Identified as a soldier from Gatehouse ex Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser “First Instalment of Stewartry Roll of Honour” 25th December 1914.       Private James Craik     Royal Scots.

CWGC : James Craik Private 13469 R.S.F. Killed at Loos, September 26th 1915, aged 22 years. Parents James & Mary Craik, Buittle Mains Cottage, Dalbeattie.

Soldiers Who Died : James Craik's birthplace given as Auchencairn.

Scotlands People Index : There is no James Craik birth registered in Girthon or Anwoth between 1890 & 1898.
1911 census :  no Craiks living in Girthon or Anwoth.
Valuation Rolls  : No Craiks in Girthon or Anwoth in 1915.

Gatehouse Link : No sign of any James Craik living in Gatehouse (as stated in initial SRoH), but perhaps he  was working near Gatehouse immediately before the outbreak of war.

Enlisted March 1915, Royal Army Service Corps (Motor Transport).     Served in Eastern Front (Egypt, Mudros, Serbia & Macedonia).     Awarded 1914-1915 Star.

Medal Index Card : Pte. Christopher Crosbie;  M2/052390 ASC.   Sent to Egypt 6th April 1915.

1901 Girthon Census, Ann Street, Gatehouse : Christopher Crosbie (5, born Gatehouse) with father William (posting master) and mother Jessie + 6 siblings.

1911 Girthon Census, Ann Street, Gatehouse : Christopher (15, assistant chauffeur, born Gatehouse), with father William (posting master) and mother Jessie + brothers William, George, James and John + sisters Jessie, Maggie, Hannah and Emma.

Girthon Parish Banns :
William Crosbie married Jessie Mary Girvan in 1890 (Chrisopher’s parents).
June 13th 1926, Christopher Crosbie residing at Greenslack, Parish of Borgue & Evelyn Stewart Tait, residing in Parish of Girthon, married in Girthon Church. Evelyn was a nurse during World War I.

Christopher was a brother of soldiers George, James and William Crosbie.
