Helen Caig

SRoH.     Nursing Sister Helen Caig.      Home: Gatehouse.
Enlisted 16th August 1914, Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service.
Served in France 20th August 1914 to 1st January 1919) & Germany (2nd January to 6th June 1919). Awarded Royal Red Cross, 2nd class, and 1914 Star.

Gravestone at Borgue: Helen was born c.1883, (she was 69 when she died in 1952), father John Caig, mother Margaret Marshall.  Home: Bruachmore, Gatehouse.

Brother James’ Army Records : Helen served with British Expeditionary Force in Cologne.  Father John Caig, gamedealer. Lived at Brewery Cottage, High Street, Gatehouse.

1891 Rerrick census : at Stockmoss Cottage, Nellie Caig (born c.1882, Rerrick, Kirkcudbrightshire) was living with her father John (gamekeeper) and mother Maggie + her sister Agnes (born c.1884) and brother James (born c.1887 Rerrick).

1911 Anwoth census, Fleet Street : John Caig (rabbit dealer) and wife Janet (born Perthshire) + son James (age 23, b.Rerrick,  rabbit catcher). Helen was not at home.

Borgue Gravestone : James & Helen's mother Margaret Marshall died in 1905 at Earlston, Borgue.

Anwoth Parish Banns: John Caig, butcher, Fleet Street, married Janet McLaren from Twynholm on 19/01/1908. Janet (Jessie) was Helen's step-mother.

James and Helen Caig are brother and sister.
The Caig family continued to live at Bruachmore until Helen died in 1952. Bruachmore and Brewery Cottage are adjoining properties in the Old Brewery complex on the High Street, Gatehouse.

Died in 44th Casualty Clearing Station, Puchevillers 14th November 1916.

Height 5’ 10½’’ & weight 168lbs.  Father: Mr John Caig, gamedealer (aged 63)
Sister Helen Caig was a military nurse.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 1st December 1916 : Mr John Caig, game dealer, Gatehouse has learned unofficially that his son, James Caig, Gordon Highlanders, was severely wounded on 13th November. Another Gatehouse lad, who saw his comrade carried off the field, conveyed the news in a letter home.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 8th December 1916 : Last week, Mr John Caig, Brewery Cottage, Gatehouse received official information that his son Private James Caig. of the Gordon Highlanders, had died of his wounds in hospital.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 15th December 1916 : a photo of Gatehouse soldier Private Jas. Craig of the Gordon Highlanders. We know of no soldier called James Craig from Gatehouse, although there was a William Craig and a James Craik. However, James Caig was wounded and later died of his wounds in November 1916, so we believe that this is a photo of James Caig not James Craig.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 16th November 1917: In Memoriam 'In loving memory of my son Private James Caig, Gordon Highlanders, who died of wounds in France on 14th November 1916.' Inserted by father John Caig, Brewery Cottage, Gatehouse.

Killed on the Somme, 16th March 1917.

1901 Kirkcudbright Census, at Greatcross Bothy: Thomas Muirhead (16, assistant gamekeeper, born Lochmaben) with gamekeeper William Stitt.

1911 Girthon census, at Laghead : Thomas Muirhead (26, gamekeeper, born Lochmaben) was a boarder with the Caig family.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 30th March 1917: Thomas Muirhead (previously gamekeeper at Cally when he lived at High Creoch) was killed on 16/03/1917. A letter to his sister in Kirkmahoe says that he was struck by a shell and killed instantly. He said that the whole company mourned the loss of one of their gallant comrades and that he would be missed as a brother.
He had enlisted on 28/08/1914 in the Argyll & Southern Highlanders but later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. He was one of the first men from Gatehouse to enlist. He was 31 years old. In more than 2 years at the Front he had never been ill. He was a very popular man.
