Hugh Greenshields

SRoH.         Private Hugh Greenshields.               Home: Gatehouse.
Enlisted in Canadians.     Served on Western Front.

Scottish War Memorial website : Private 187583 of 8th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. Enlisted with his brother Thomas (Private 18784) and served alongside his brother. They were both wounded in the same attack but Thomas died of his wounds on 18/10/1916.

1901 Anwoth Census, Dromore Cottage (Gatehouse Station) : Hugh (7,  born Anwoth), with father Walter (railway labourer, 43, born Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, & mother Maggie (41, born Dundonald, Ayrshire) + brother Thomas, 4 and sister Marion, 13.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 11th November 1916: Word has been received by Mr and Mrs Greenshields, Gatehouse of Fleet Station, that their son Private Hugh Greenshields, Canadian Contingent, has been wounded and is in hospital.

Dumfries & Galloway Standard 11/11/1916 : Wounded alongside his brother Thomas in October 1916, but Hugh survived his injuries.

Parent's marriage : Walter Greenshields to Maggie Paton at Kilmarnock in 1880. (ex Scotlands People Index).

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 11th November 1916 : Word came last week to Mr and Mrs Greenshields, Gatehouse of Fleet Station, that their son Private Tom Greenshields had died of wounds in action on 18th October. Private Greenshields belonged to a Canadian regiment and was 20 years of age.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 11th November 1916 : A poem was published in memory of Private Tom Greenshields. It ended - 'Little I thought when he said goodbye, It would be the last parting between you and I.' Inserted by a sorrowful father and mother.

William Stewart Grierson

SRoH.      Private William Stuart Grierson.      Home: Auchenlarie, Gatehouse.     Enlisted February 1917, 79th T.R.B. Montrose (Training Reserve Brigade).     Transferred to 15th Battalion Royal Scots.        Served on Western Front (Peronne Front above Rosiel, 3rd Battle of Ypres, Passchendaele Ridge).       Prisoner in Germany from 22nd October 1917 to 22nd December 1918.

1901 Borgue Census, at Littleton Farm : William (age 2, born Borgue) with father Joseph (35, farmer) and mother Jane G (30) + 2 sisters.

1911 Anwoth Census, at Low Auchenlarie : Joseph and Jane Grierson (both born Twynholm) + son Clement (born Borgue). Joseph was a farmer. William not found in Scotland or England.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 30th November 1917: Private W. Stewart Grierson, Royal Scots, elder son of Mr & Mrs Grierson, Auchenlarie was officially reported missing 22nd October 1917. He was 19 when he enlisted in February 1916. He had been on active service since August. Prior to joining up he worked on a farm.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 28th December 1917: Private W. Stewart Grierson, Royal Scots has sent a postcard to his father Mr Grierson at Auchenlarie to say that he is a prisoner of war in Germany. He had been missing since 22nd October 1917.

Edinburgh Gazette 29th January 1937 notice discharging all debts contracted by him. He was a farmer at Gledpark, Borgue.

Death :  At Carlisle on15/12/1938 (age 40)  1939 probate granted to his widow Agnes Mary McLelland of Low Cummerdale Farm, near Carlisle.   (ex Ancestry.co.uk).

Served on Easter Front (Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine).
Killed at Gaza 19th April 1917.  Pre-war service – in Territorials.
