Dumfries & Galloway Standard : 11th July 1917, reporting his death on 11th May 1917 states that he had visited Gatehouse in 1916 – for first time in 27 years, so he probably emigrated to Canada soon after 1891 census.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser : 10th May 1918. In loving memory of our uncle Private Allan Hume, Canadians, killed in action 11th May 1917. Fondly remembered by two of his nieces, Nurse Campbell, Salisbury Plain and H. Campbell, Belmont, Kirkcudbright.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 12th August 1921: Unveiling of Gatehouse War Memorial. Wreath laid: ‘In fond remembrance of Pte. Allan Hume, killed May 1916, from his brother and nephew and nieces’

Allan had a complicated family history. He was born on 17/12/1870 as Charles Edward Allan Byars, the illegitimate son of Jane Byars, a milliner in Fleet Street, Gatehouse.
When his sister Jessie married in 1890, she gives her mother as Jane Byars but her father is ‘reputed to be John Hume, a mason journeyman’. There is a strong possibility that John Hume is also Allan’s father.
