1881 Tranent Census : James S. Jarron (retired butcher), before Thomas was born. Was his occupation a transcription error for retired butler ?

1891 Edinburgh Census, Jamaica Street : Thomas W Jarrow  (born c.1881 East Lothian) with widowed mother Rebecca + 2 sisters and a brother. One sister (Rebecca) born Gelston, Kirkcudbrightshire.

1901 Edinburgh Census, 2 Leslie Place : Thomas not at home but his father James S Jarron (retired butler) has re-appeared with wife Rebecca + son Joseph and daughter Rebecca (born Gelston).

1901 Paisley, Renfrewshire Census at Ross Hall : Thomas Jarron (19, born Cockenzie, Haddingtonshire) servant at the home of James Cowan, railway contractor.

1891 Girthon Census, Catherine Street : John Johnston (2, born Girthon) with father David (mole catcher), mother Ann Jane, + brother James and 4 sisters.

1901 Girthon census, Catherine Street : John Johnston, (12, born Gatehouse) with father David (mole catcher), mother Ann, brother David T. + 2 sisters.

John M. and David T. Johnston(e) appear to be brothers. David was killed in 1917.

Albert William Johnstone

SRoH.     Private Albert William Johnstone.        Home: Pulcree, Gatehouse.
Enlisted January 1915, 2/1st Ayrshire Yeomanry.
Transferred to 16th Royal Scots, then 9th Royal Scots.     Served on Western Front.
Wounded once, Cambrai.   Reported missing, 24th July 1918 at Buzancy and killed on that date.  (Some records say he was killed August 1918).

Died 24/07/1918.     On Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France

Military Records : 27 years old on 12th Jan 1915 when he enlisted (2232 Reserve Ayrshire Yeomanry). Born Kirkmabreck. Mother Sarah W. Johnstone of Pulcree. Ploughman, 5’ 8’’ tall and Presbyterian.  Mother Sarah was next of kin.     Given leave several times to return home to help with the harvest and other farm work.
18th April 1917 : Promoted to acting Lance-Corporal with the Ayrshire Yeomanry.
13th November 1917 : Reverted to Private when he transferred to Royal Scots F.
February 1918 : in Rouen General Hospital with a GSW Face wound.     [GSW = gunshot wound].
March 1918 : Suffered from Trench Foot.
24th July 1918  'Death presumed for official purposes'
3rd December 1919 medal for Gallantry & 1914 Star + personal effects sent to his mother Mrs Sarah Johnstone, Pulcree, Gatehouse-of-Fleet

Died at Salonika, 28th November 1917.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 7th December 1917: Gunner David Johnstone R.F.A. is ill in hosptal in Salonika since 28th November. He died of dysentry aged 23. He has a wife and 2 children who reside at Neilson Square. His father is Mr David Johnstone, Catherine Street, Gatehouse. Information was received from Lieut. Lawrie from Gatehouse.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 12th August 1921: Unveiling of Gatehouse War Memorial. Wreath laid: ‘In loving memory of our dear son, D. T. Johnstone, from father, mother, brothers and sisters.’

John McK. and David T. Johnstone appear to be brothers. John survived the war.

Medal Index Card : Sgt Henry Johnstone A & SH (4212) and (251698). This card directs to another card for L/Cpl Harry Johnstone A & SH (4212). The second card says that he was sent to France 27th June 1915 and demobbed 16th March 1919.

1911 Anwoth Census, Fleet Street : Henry Johnstone (21, carter, born Kirkcudbright) with father William (52, gamekeeper), mother Mary + brothers Ernest and Robert.

Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser 11th August 1916 : Information was received at the end of last week by Mr William Johnstone, Fleet View Cottage, Gatehouse, that his son, Lance-Sergt. Henry Johnstone, had been wounded. Sergt. Johnstone is in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.

Family Tree on Ancestry.co.uk : Henry born 25th July 1890 at Kirkland, Kirkcudbright.     Died in 1953 at Newton Mearns, Renfrewshire.     Father William Johnstone (1859 to 1910); mother Mary Milligan (1862 to 1910); wife Margaret Strachan Tillie (1893 to 1918).

Marriage Certificate : Married 21st August 1917 to Margaret S Tillie at Thornliebank Parish Church, Eastwood, Renfrewshire.     Henry was 27 years old.      He was a carter who became a L/Sgt on active service with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.     His home was Gatehouse.     Father William Johnstone (gamekeeper, deceased), mother Mary Milligan (deceased).

Gatehouse link : Lived in Fleet Street in 1911 and when he enlisted.
